The debate over marketing human organs isn’t a laughing matter. The truth is that there is a serious shortage of organ donors verses those people needing transplants and that has been on the rise for years (see Figure 1). According to organdonor.gov there are over 120,000 people currently waiting for an organ. 21 people die every day while waiting for an organ transplant and those numbers, people needing organs and the number of people that die while waiting for an organ, are increasing because of medicine and medical technology which help people live longer. Eight lives can be saved by 1 organ donor, but if there are not enough donors then those numbers will continue to grow. Typically organ donations are made after a person dies, either by making their wishes known to family and friends and registering as an organ donor or by the family deciding to donate the organs of their loved ones after they pass. The moral and ethical dilemma regarding organ donation, for both living a nd cadaveric donations, have been a hot topic since the first kidney transplant was carried out in 1954 on identical twins.
